Coolmore Manor House was at one time also a small hotel with only 8 rooms and situated along the old railway track bringing people from Ballyshannon to Rossnowlagh and further. It is proven that the hotel only had one bathroom at that time! How times have changed! The railway track no longer exists and the building underwent major restoration in the past five years in order to become what it is today, a lovely Georgian Country House with all of today's mod cons (e.g. Central Heating with wooden Pellets) and pleasant luxuries.
The Manor House dates back to 1820 and is a late Georgian country house. It has an interesting historical past. It was built by a landlord, Alexander Hamilton and it is said that Margaret Mitchell stayed at the house when she visited Ireland to research the Civil War experience in preparation for writing her famous classic novel GONE WITH THE WIND. It is believed that Coolmore Manor House stood as the model for the house called Tara which provides the setting for the novel.
